Applied Vision Science

We are delighted to announce the inaugural Applied Vision Science (AVS) meeting. This one-day conference will be held in St. Pete Beach, Florida on May 20, 2026, the Wednesday immediately following the annual meeting of the Vision Sciences Society.

Mission

The purpose of the AVS meeting is to gather and highlight the highest quality research in applied vision science. The meeting is co-located with the Vision Sciences Society meeting, to maximize sharing between the basic and applied vision science communities. We believe that bringing the best applied vision science to what is already the best vision science conference will benefit both communities.

Scope

Applied Vision Science is research on human vision that enables new technologies, devices, and applications. The emphasis is on the vision science underlying practical applications. Clinical topics that are already well served by meetings such as ARVO are outside the scope of this conference. Modelling in support of applications is welcome, but pure modelling efforts are better placed in the VSS meeting or the MODVIS satellite meeting. A few example topics are shown below. We welcome suggestions  for additional topics.

  • Display design
  • Optical design
  • AR/VR/MR
  • Image and video capture, coding and compression
  • Image and video quality
  • Camera design and computational photography
  • Stereoscopic capture, coding, and display
  • Color coding and display
  • High dynamic range imaging
  • Computer graphics
  • User Interface Design

Venue

The AVS meeting will be held at the TradeWinds Island Resorts, 5500 Gulf Blvd, St Pete Beach, FL 33706. This is also the venue for the VSS meeting in 2026. See Accomodations on the VSS meeting website for hotel reservations.
